rinsed and dried bok choy in the salad spinner.

Prep bok choy: Give each bulb a good rinse under cold water to get rid of any lingering grit or dirt. You’ll be surprised at how much can hide in those leafy greens!

Cut off the very bottom of the stem, just enough to remove any dried or rough edges. Don’t cut too much off, as the stem keeps the leaves together while cooking.

Pat the bok choy dry with a paper towel or leave it in a colander to air dry for a few minutes. Ensuring the bok choy is dry helps with a crisp texture.

Tip: A salad spinner works well to drain and dry the bok choy pretty quickly.

Season: Mix the sesame oil, sesame seeds, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper in a small bowl.

Brush the seasoning oil all over the bok choy making sure to coat the bok choy leaves too.

Air fry: Place bok choy in the air fryer basket in a single layer. You want each piece to have its own space to ensure it gets crispy and well-cooked. Cook for 6-8 minutes, flipping the bok choy halfway through cooking until the bok choy is tender and the leaves are slightly crispy.

Tip: No need to thaw. Cook straight from frozen.

Once it’s done, carefully remove the bok choy from the air fryer – remember it’ll be hot!

Serve your delicious Air Fryer Bok Choy right away with the dipping sauce or on its own, and sprinkle with optional sesame seeds for an extra toasty flavor.

What is Bok Choy?

Bok Choy, also known as Pak Choi or Chinese Cabbage, is a type of leafy green vegetable commonly used in Chinese cuisine. It’s a cruciferous vegetable and belongs to the same family as broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage.

The white stalks are crunchy with tender, flavorful green leaves. The baby bok choy we use in this recipe has a mild, sweet flavor than the mature variety. It’s used in soups, salads, and stir-fries.

Bok choy is available year-round and can be found in many grocery stores and Asian markets. Whether it’s stir-fried, steamed, or yes, air-fried like in our recipe, Bok Choy is a delicious way to add a nutritional punch to your meals!

Ways to Use Air Fryer Bok Choy

The versatility of Air Fryer Bok Choy extends far beyond a simple side dish. In Asian cuisines, it’s added to a variety of meals in different ways. Think steamed or stir-fried in soups, noodles, salads, etc. Air-fried bok choy can be used in many of these dishes too.

This will be a wonderful addition as a side dish with Asian-inspired main dishes like spicy salmon, teriyaki salmon, teriyaki chicken, General Tsos chicken, and air fryer shrimp.

Substitutions

Don’t worry if you’re out of sesame oil or if you’re looking to experiment with flavors; there are plenty of options for substitutions.

Sesame oil: replace with olive oil or cooking oil. It may not give the distinct Asian flair of sesame oil, but it’s commonly found in most kitchens and works in a pinch.

Black pepper: for a kick of spice consider red pepper flakes. It’s an easy swap that’ll introduce a new level of heat to your dish.

Garlic powder: minced fresh garlic can easily take its place if the garlic powder is not available, giving the Bok Choy a punchier, more aromatic garlic flavor.

Dipping sauce: replace it with your favorite sauce. Or skip the sauce and sprinkle some lemon juice when serving.

Just remember – cooking is all about improvisation and making the recipe your own!

Storage Instructions

Storing your cooked Air Fryer Bok Choy is a breeze.

If you have leftovers (which might be unlikely due to how delicious this dish is!), simply let them cool completely before transferring them into an airtight container. Pop this container in the refrigerator and your Bok Choy should stay fresh for up to 3-5 days.

When you’re ready to enjoy it again, you can reheat it in the microwave for a quick side dish, or toss it back in the air fryer to restore some of that delightful crispiness.

However, this dish is best enjoyed fresh, so try to only make as much as you’ll eat in one sitting to enjoy its best flavor and texture.
