What’s The Best Bread for French Toast Sticks?

I like to use a sweet bread like Challah, or Brioche bread for this recipe. With these sweet breads I don’t need to use much sugar. You can completely omit adding sugar to the batter too.

Other types of breads that are popular for French toast are sourdough bread, Texas toast, white or wholewheat sliced bread. Make sure to add more sugar to the batter when you’re using these types of bread. Or have lots of maple syrup around to dip them in.

Use stale bread or day-old loaf of bread instead of fresh. Stale bread will hold up to the wet batter. Fresh bread will fall apart easily when soaked in the egg mixture and we don’t want that.

Recipe Tips

  • Line the Air fryer basket
    • You’ll want to line your Air fryer basket with parchment paper for easy clean-up.
    • Lining also prevents French toast sticks from sticking to the air fryer basket. I use these parchment paper liners and they last for a long time.
    • If you are out of liners, grease the basket with cooking spray instead.
  • Don’t oversoak the bread
    • Make sure to cover the bread sticks completely but don’t let them soak too much in the batter lest they fall apart.
  • Single layer.
    • Place French toast sticks in a single layer and don’t stack up. Leave space around them if possible. Cook in batches if needed. After the last batch is done, place all the toast in the air fryer and warm them up.

How To Serve

Now comes the fun part, serving these little beauties. You can choose to serve Air fryer French toast sticks with any or all of the options below.

Maple syrup is our go-to but honey and pancake syrups are good options too.

I like to add some strawberries, raspberries, or blueberries to make it pretty. Some stewed cinnamon apples in the Fall will be a delicious addition.

If I’m in the mood for some spice, I add a cinnamon sugar mixture on top of the French toast sticks before they go in the air fryer. So delicious!

If you want them super decadent, a dollop of whipped cream and a drizzle of chocolate syrup will be perfect!

How To Store and reheat

Once cooled, store leftover French toast in an airtight container in the fridge. It will last for 3 to 5 days.

To freeze, place the cooked French toast sticks on a lined baking sheet and freeze. Once frozen, transfer to a freezer bag and store in the freezer up to 3 months.

To reheat French toast sticks, place them in the air fryer and reheat them at 375˚F for a few minutes until warm through.

How to Make Frozen French Toast Sticks in the air fryer

If you have store bought ready made frozen French toast sticks you can cook them in the Air fryer for a quick breakfast or snack.

To cook them from frozen, cook at 375˚F for 5 to 6 minutes or until they are warm and crispy. These sticks are pre-cooked so you don’t need to cook them for longer.

Just made this with gluten free bread (celiac disease) and it is GREAT! I’ll be freezing the leftovers and I have high hopes that it is still delicious.
