Air Fryer Grilled Cheese
These Air Fryer Grilled Cheese Sandwiches are a GAME CHANGER! With perfectly melted cheese, crunchy toasted bread every bite is pure bliss! Serve with soup for a meal or on its own any time!

Air Fryer Grilled Cheese Sandwich
If you’ve never made a grilled cheese sandwich in the air fryer, you are seriously missing out. No more hovering over the stove, pressing the sandwich down with a spatula, and hoping you don’t burn one side while the cheese is still half-melted.
The air fryer’s circulating heat does all the work for you. You get perfectly golden, crispy bread and that ooey-gooey melted cheese every single time – with minimal effort.
I’ve tested this with everything from basic white sandwich bread to thick sourdough slices, and they all come out brilliant. This recipe is genuinely beginner-friendly. If you can make toast, you can make this. I like to serve this with a bowl of tomato soup on the side for a truly comfort meal.
What You’ll Need
We just need a few simple ingredients for this air fryer grilled cheese!
- Bread – Any bread works here! I used regular white sandwich bread to show you it doesn’t need to be fancy. But slices of sourdough or a good artisan loaf take this to another level.
- Softened butter/ mayonnaise – I use butter but some use mayonnaise too. Choose what works for you! Both taste great in this sandwich.
- Cheese – Sharp Cheddar, Monterey Jack, Swiss, Havarti, or Pepper Jack all melt wonderfully. I found one thing that makes a real difference: skip the pre-shredded bagged cheese. It has a coating on it that stops it from melting as smoothly. Use sliced cheese from the deli or block cheese you grate yourself – the melt is completely different and totally worth it.
How To Make Air Fry Grilled Cheese

- Place your bread on the cutting board.
- Butter the slices. This is totally optional and you can choose to butter only the outside of the sandwich.
- Keep your sliced or grated cheese on top of the bread and close the sandwich.
- Spread butter on the outside of the sandwich.
- Insert a toothpick into the sandwich.
- Preheat the air fryer at 370F for 3 to 5 minutes.
- Place the sandwich in the air fryer basket and cook for 4 to 5 minutes. Carefully flip the sandwich and cook the other side for another 4 minutes or until golden brown on both sides and the cheese is melted.
- Serve warm.
Recipe Tips
- Buttering on the outside will give you a nice toasted sandwich without drying it out.
- Use a toothpick or a small wire rack to keep the top slice of bread in place while air frying.
- Preheat the Air fryer to cook fast and to make the grilled cheese sandwich crispy.
- If you’re cooking several sandwiches, place them in a single layer and cook in batches.

You can include many flavors to your grilled cheese sandwiches and they are endless! Here are some of my favorites:

- Red chili flakes or chili paste

Hi Marty, since the nutritional values given are estimates it’s better to use a nutritional calculator you would normally use to calculate the calories according to the ingredients you use.
