Air Fryer Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Air fryer makes the best grilled cheese sandwich! They are life-changing! I was hooked to them after my first bite. If you haven’t tried making grilled cheese in the Air fryer you’re missing out. This is an easy recipe even beginners can make!

No more standing near the stove and flipping and waiting for the cheese to melt. The circulating air in the Air fryer makes the bread perfectly crisp without burning while the cheese inside melts to ooey-gooey perfection.

I love to have my grilled cheese sandwich on its own or served with a bowl of soup for dinner for a complete meal! It’s the perfect comfort food!

You can use your favorite bread for this recipe. Slices of good sourdough bread or artisan bread would be wonderful! I have used regular white sandwich bread here to show that any bread will work and they all taste so good!

As for the cheese, my favorites are sharp Cheddar and jalapeno spiced Monterey Jack. Any good melting cheese like Swiss, Havarti or Pepper Jack will work as well. Use the cheese slices or grated cheese for best results! Pre shredded cheese might not be the best in this recipe!

We just need a few simple ingredients for this air fryer grilled cheese!

  • Bread – use your favorite bread. Sourdough, artisan, or sandwich bread all work. You’ll have to change the cooking times slightly depending on how brown you want it to be.
  • Softened butter/ mayonnaise – I use butter but some use mayonnaise too. Choose what works for you! Both taste great in this sandwich.
  • Cheese – Use a good melting cheese. Cheddar cheese, Monterey jack, Swiss cheese, Pepper jack all work well.

Step by Step Process to Air Fry Grilled Cheese

Air fry at 370F for 4 to 5 minutes, flip the sandwich and cook for another 3 to 4 minutes until golden brown.

How To Make Air Fryer Grilled Cheese

Here’s how to make the best grilled cheese sandwiches in the air fryer:

  1. Place your bread on the cutting board.
  2. Butter the slices. This is totally optional and you can choose to butter only the outside of the sandwich.
  3. Keep your sliced or grated cheese on top of the bread and close the sandwich.
  4. Spread butter on the outside of the sandwich.
  5. Insert a toothpick into the sandwich.
  6. Preheat the air fryer at 370F for 3 to 5 minutes.
  7. Place the sandwich in the air fryer basket and cook for 4 to 5 minutes. Carefully flip the sandwich and cook the other side for another 4 minutes or until golden brown on both sides and the cheese is melted.
  8. Serve warm.

Best Tips

  • You can skip buttering the bread. But spreading some butter on the outside will give you a nice toasted sandwich without drying it out.
  • Use a toothpick to keep the top slice of bread in place while air frying.
  • Preheat the Air fryer to cook fast and to make the grilled cheese sandwich crispy.
  • If you’re cooking several sandwiches, place them in a single layer and cook in batches.

In a preheated Air fryer it takes about 8 to 10 minutes to cook the grilled cheese sandwich. Flip the sandwich halfway through.

You can cook your sandwich at 370F or 375F or 180C to 190C.

How to store?

If you have any leftovers, wrap them in a plastic wrap and keep it in the fridge for 3 days.
