Air Fryer Pineapple With Cinnamon

The other day I walked into the store and saw pineapple on sale. I bought a few and was thinking of ways to eat them. It’s the dead of winter and I wanted nothing more than to be somewhere tropical. Even though I can’t be there physically, I can get a taste of summer through fresh tropical fruits like pineapple.

Growing up, pineapple is one of my favorite fruits and it still is. We’d eat it, cut up with a sprinkle of salt and red chili powder, or in fresh fruit salads, cooked in curries or cooked with sugar as a dessert. This grilled pineapple makes me nostalgic.

This Air fryer pineapple tastes like grilled with perfectly caramelized edges without the need to turn on the BBQ. Pineapples have a natural sweetness to them so you don’t need a lot of sugar. This is a delicious dessert served with ice cream or whipped cream. If you’re watching your calories, go with frozen yogurt. They make a fantastic treat on their own too.

INGREDIENTS

  • Pineapple – I recommend fresh pineapple. I will show you how to cut a pineapple in this post, when you scroll down a bit. Canned pineapple can be used in a pinch.
  • Brown sugar
  • Melted butter
  • Cinnamon
  • Nutmeg
  • Cayenne (Optional) – add a nice spicy kick but it’s totally optional.

Step by step process

Mix the pineapple with melted butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and cayenne if you’re using it.

Place them in a preheated Air fryer basket and sprinkle more brown sugar on top.

Air fry them at 380F for 12 to 15 minutes until they are browned on the edges.

How To Choose A Pineapple

Choose a pineapple with bright green leaves. The pineapples you find in the store are raw. The outer skin should be firm and shouldn’t yield when pressed.

I prefer to use ripe pineapples for their natural sweetness so I can use less sugar. To ripen, leave the pineapple in your fruit basket for a few days. When ripe, pineapple skin turns orange and has a sweet smell.

How To Cut Pineapple

Slicing a pineapple is a breeze. Here’s how to do it:

Place the pineapple on a large cutting board or slab.

Cut the outer leaves from both ends.

Place the pineapple upright and cut the outer skin.

Keep cutting the skin around the entire pineapple. You shouldn’t have any brown eyes or spots left.

Now, place the pineapple horizontally and slice it into1/4″ or 1/2″ thick rounds. I don’t core the pineapple but if you want to, remove the core before slicing.

You can now use the pineapple rings or further cut them into quarters.

How To Make Grilled Pineapple in Air Fryer

Making grilled pineapple in the Air fryer is so easy. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Cut the pinepple into rings or quarters.
  2. Add the pineapple along with melted butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg into a large mixing bowl and mix until well combined.
  3. Preheat the Air fryer at 380F for 5 minutes.
  4. Line the Air fryer with parchment paper and place the pineapple slices. Sprinkle more brown sugar on top.
  5. Air fry at 380F for 12 to 15 minutes until the slices are browned on the edges.
  6. Remove and serve with vanilla ice cream.

Best Tips

  • Use fresh pineapple. If you want to use canned pineapple, drain the slices and dry them with a paper towel.
  • Preheat the Air fryer to cook faster and to mimic grilling.
  • Line the Air fryer basket with parchment paper for easy clean up.
  • Don’t overcrowd the air fryer basket. Place slices in a single layer.
  • Cook in batches if needed.

What To Serve Air Fryer Pineapple With

Serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped topping for a fantastic dessert. Frozen vanilla yogurt would taste great too if you’re watching your calories.

Make sure to save the butter and brown sugar sauce to pour on the ice cream. That’s so delicious!

This grilled pineapple can be served on its own along with your dinner too. They’d be a great side dish with meat or chicken dishes.

To store leftover Air fryer pineapple, place them in an airtight container and store in the fridge for 4 to 5 days. We had a few pineapples prepped in the fridge for when the cravings struck and had it throughout the week.

You can reheat them in the microwave or in the Air fryer.

  • ¼ cup brown sugar plus 2 tablespoon to sprinkle
  • 3 tbs melted butter
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg
