This sauce has that perfect balance of creamy, sweet, and tangy that makes you want to put it on absolutely everything. And around here Bang Bang Chicken is a family favorite.

What Is Bang Bang Sauce?

Bang bang sauce is a creamy, slightly sweet, slightly tangy dipping sauce that’s become hugely popular for a reason coz it just works with so many things. You’ll see it served with crispy shrimp or chicken at restaurants, but once you know how to make it at home, you’ll realize you don’t need to go anywhere.

The base is mayo and sweet chilli sauce, with a little splash of vinegar and sriracha to cut through the richness. Simple as that.

If you’ve tried my Spicy Mayo Sauce, you’ll notice these two are cousins – both creamy, mayo based and dangerously addictive. The big difference is that spicy mayo brings the heat, while this bang bang sauce leans sweeter and milder thanks to the sweet chilli sauce. So if you’re cooking for people who don’t love too much spice, this one is the one to reach for.

ingredients for bang bang sauce.
  • Mayonnaise – Use a good quality full-fat mayo for the creamiest result. Hellmann’s work great. You can use light mayo but the sauce won’t be quite as rich.
  • Sweet chilli sauce – This is where all the sweetness comes from and makes the sauce unique. Any brand works fine.
  • Sriracha – Gives the sauce its kick. One tablespoon is the sweet spot but add more if you want spicy.
  • White vinegar – Just a tablespoon to brighten everything up and balance out the sweetness.

  1. Add your mayonnaise, sweet chilli sauce, and vinegar into a small bowl.
  2. Stir until everything is fully combined and you’ve got a smooth, creamy, pinkish-orange sauce. That’s it. You’re done.
  3. Give it a taste. Want it sweeter? Add a little more sweet chilli. Want more tang? A tiny extra splash of vinegar does the trick. Want more heat? Extra sriracha or a pinch of red chili flakes help.

Recipe Tips

  • Make it ahead – This sauce keeps well in the fridge in a sealed jar for up to a week. It actually tastes even better after a day as the flavours settle together.
  • Make it lighter – Swap half the mayo for Greek yogurt if you want something a little less rich.
