Canned Salmon Sandwich Spread

Growing up canned fish was a regular occurence in our house. Being close to the sea we get plenty of fresh fish too. But for quick meals and snacks most people rely on canned varieties. Real salmon is a luxury back then. I don’t think we ever saw salmon. What we called salmon was actually mackarels. So canned mackarel which is being called canned salmon was used in sandwich spread, fish cutlets, fish buns, fish rolls and fish patties(empanadas) to name a few. Yes, there are plenty of fish snacks and appetizers in Sri Lankan cuisine.

Ingredients for salmon sandwich spread

Instead of mackarel now I use salmon. It is one of the most nutritious foods out there. Salmon is

  • Rich in omega 3 fatty acids
  • Great source of protein
  • High in B vitamins
  • Contains selenium,potassium and antioxidants
  • Helps fight inflammation

It’s recommended to have at least two servings of salmon per week. And look for wild salmon, ethically farmed to get the best.

But for most of us buying good quality salmon steaks couple of times a week to feed our large families or ever growing tummies is out of the budget. And that’s why I rely on good quality canned wild salmon for our meals at least once or twice a week.

This canned salmon sandwich spread is a regular in our weekly breakfast or lunch.

And my favourite breakfast of all time has to be this spread. I love to warm my toasts and grace it with dollops of butter and top it off with generous amount of this salmond spread. I could eat it any time of the day and eat till I’m really full. My kids love it between two toasted slices of bread for their school lunch. Top with some sprouts or your favorite green mix and you’re good to go. It’s so good guys, you’ll have to try this out !

This can make a great work lunch and this goes in my hubby’s lunhbox once a week. If you’re out and about this holiday season this is an easy spread that you can make within minutes to grab and go.

And all you need is some chopped onions, green chilies, butter, lemon juice and cracked pepper. No mayo or cream cheese or what not. It’s creamy without these and easily spreadable. Go make some today and thank me later !

I love how simple this is, and a way to incorporate more seafood into our diets in an easy way! Loving the squeeze of lemon juice, too- seriously the perfect little kick to complement salmon. Great recipe!

Canned salmon is a perfect solution for the holidays and busy days. I use it a lot to make empanadas and easy recipes like croquettes and fish cakes. LOved how you added lemon to brighten up the bite. Looks so appetizing.

I need to make this. I love canned salmon and always looking for easy and quick recipes for lunch. I imagine green olives or capers would be a great topping for salmon too,

What a great idea! We’ve had smoked salmon a few times, but haven’t tried making our own canned salmon spread. How quick and easy! Looking forward to giving this one a go.
