Expert Tips

  • Make the homemade teriyaki sauce for the best flavor and adjust it to your liking. If you have a favorite bottled teriyaki sauce you can use that too.
  • Preheat Air fryer.
  • Line the Air fryer basket with parchment paper for easy cleanup.
  • Air Fry the skin-side up for crispy salmon skin.
  • For perfectly cooked salmon, don’t overcrowd the Air fryer basket. Cook in batches if needed.
  • Check for doneness using an instant-read meat thermometer. The salmon should be done when the internal temperature is 140F to 145F.
  • Double the amount of teriyaki sauce to use with rice and vegetables.

What Air Fryer to Use?

I use a Cosori 5.8 quart basket type and is perfect for our family of 5. Clean up is easy too!

Substitutions

  • Soy sauce – use tamari or coconut aminos instead.
  • Rice vinegar – use rice wine vinegar or white vinegar in a pinch. I’d stay away from apple cider vinegar as it changes the flavor profile completely.
  • Brown sugar – white castor sugar, coconut sugar or any brown sugar sweeteners can be used.
  • Cornstarch – Use tapioca flour instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use bottled teriyaki sauce?

Yes, you can use bottled teriyaki sauce for a convenient and quick meal. If it’s thick, add one to two tablespoons of water to dilute and marinate the salmon.

Can I use frozen salmon fillets?

I often stock up on frozen salmon fillets when they go on sale or for days when I forget to buy the protein. Thaw the salmon overnight in the fridge if you can. Wipe the salmon dry with paper towels before proceeding with the recipe.

How to cook teriyaki salmon in the oven?

You can cook salmon teriyaki in the oven too if you don’t have an air fryer yet. Preheat the oven to 375F and cook the salmon for around 12 minutes skin side down. Remove the salmon from the oven and brush the teriyaki glaze and bake for a few more minutes.

How to prevent the Air fryer from smelling after cooking fish?

I have had a lot of readers asking what they can do to prevent the Air fryer from smelling after cooking fish. Here are a few things that have worked for me.

  • Dry the fish thoroughly with paper towels. Sometimes, it’s the water that seeps from the fish that contributes to the smell.
  • Line your basket or tray with parchment paper so that fish is not in contact with the surfaces.
  • As soon as your Air fryer is cooled after cooking, wash it. I spray the Air fryer basket with Dawn power wash. Then I fill it with warm water and let it soak until I wash it or put it in the dishwasher. This should hopefully remove the smell.

This was delicious!!! 😋 I had to air fry longer than recipe stated but that may be because of the parchment paper. I wasn’t sure if paper should have holes in it or not. But salmon cooked well with a nice teriyaki crust! Yummy!
