How To Clean Mushrooms

There’s a debate on whether to wash mushrooms or not. I’ve always washed mushrooms in the past and for the most part, ended up with soggy mushrooms.

Then I read an article from a chef about just wiping the mushrooms to get rid of dirt. It made a lot of sense. Unlike old days, mushrooms are grown in greenhouses in hygienic conditions. They also come packed and look very clean with hardly any dirt. So I’ve opted to just gently brush away any dirt with a kitchen towel.

If there’s a lot of dirt or you choose to wash the mushrooms, rinse them well and let the mushrooms drain in a colander. Pat the mushrooms thoroughly dry with paper towels before prepping them.

adding the seasoning to the mushrooms.

Step 1 – Wipe the mushrooms clean with a kitchen towel to remove any dirt. I don’t rinse the mushrooms but if you must rinse, drain the mushrooms and dry them thoroughly with paper towels. We don’t want soggy and wet mushrooms.

Step 2 – Cut the mushrooms in half. If they’re big, cut into quarters. We want all the pieces the same size. Transfer the mushrooms to a large bowl.

Step 3 – Add garlic powder, salt and pepper and toss to coat.

Common Questions

Can I use canned mushrooms?

Yes, canned mushrooms can be used. Drain the mushrooms and add the seasoning and oil. Skip the salt if the canned mushrooms already contain salt. Proceed with the recipe.

They won’t be as fresh-tasting and juicy as the fresh mushrooms.

Can I use whole mushrooms?

Yes, you can use whole mushrooms. Use mushrooms that are similar in size. Clean them and use them in the recipe. Increase the cooking time until they’re done.
